What Is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?

SAF is simply jet fuel. Just like traditional, petroleum-based jet fuel, SAF meets ASTM D-1655 specifications, meaning any aircraft that runs on jet fuel can run on SAF—no modifications necessary.

The difference is in how it’s made. Instead of fossil fuel, SAF is produced from sustainably-sourced materials, like used cooking oil.

What Makes SAF Better?

SAF runs like jet fuel, but over its lifecycle (from ingredient sourcing through fuel burn), it has a smaller greenhouse gas footprint. Even once blended with petroleum-based jet fuel (it’s a mandate), SAF is better for the environment without sacrificing performance.

This makes SAF the most effective way to reduce aviation’s carbon footprint.

Your Questions, Answered

How can I buy SAF in the Avfuel Network?

Via Avfuel Contract Fuel. Afterward, Avfuel can provide reliable documentation for your sustainable purchase.

How can I buy SAF where it’s not yet available?

Avfuel’s book and claim system allows you to purchase the environmental benefits of SAF even if the SAF isn’t physically available. In this system, SAF is produced and consumed at one location, but the environmental credits (emissions reductions) are transferred to the purchaser.

Email [email protected] or call 734.663.6466 for more information.

Is SAF safe?

Yes. SAF is rigorously tested and certified under ASTM standards for safety and performance. It is a drop-in fuel, meaning it can mix with the existing jet fuel in your aircraft or fuel tanks without modification. SAF has been used in approximately half a million flights since its first test flight in 2008.

Why is SAF important to the aviation industry?

While aviation produces just 2% of global emissions, with business aviation being 2% of that, the industry is committed to reducing its environmental impact. SAF offers a practical solution to lower aviation’s carbon footprint, helping aircraft operators meet climate goals, such as achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

What does the future look like for SAF?

SAF production and availability are expected to grow significantly as more investments are made in sustainable feedstocks and refining technologies. Advances in SAF production processes, and increased government and industry support, are paving the way for SAF to play a larger role in aviation’s journey toward sustainability.

How else can I reduce my carbon footprint?

By offsetting your carbon! Avfuel helps you do so by purchasing carbon credits that invest in projects with a positive impact on the environment (such as wind, solar energy, forestry and biomass projects).
